The Žižkov district of Prague, named for the Hussite general Jan Žižka, stands out as one of the city’s most characteristic quarters. The idea of erecting a statue of Žižka on horseback at Vítkov came from the builder Karel Hartig in 1862, and shortly thereafter, in his study, the regulatory plan for the future district of Žižkov was created. It was based on the patriotic concept of the quarter as a place of historical memory, with street names and public spaces referring to the Hussite movement.
